You have come to the right place if you are (or know) a lover of classic English men's fashion. We have a large collection of timeless garments with a typical English style. This classic style is not only reflected in our garments but is also reflected in the interior of our stores with, among other things, our own tartan. But what is that actually and where does the tartan of The English Hatter come from?
The shopAll our stores have a typical look. That has been the case since the very beginning in 1935, in the very first store (Heiligeweg 40 in Amsterdam). The wall cabinets filled with clothing and counters with glass display cases are made of dark mahogany. On the cabinets you can see the hats and caps stacked. There are colorful hat boxes everywhere. Classic wooden signs hang on the top of the cabinets. The interior is reminiscent of an English brown pub (only our brown pub is filled with clothing and accessories).
The English Hatter's House WindowPerhaps you have noticed it before: the use of a check pattern in the interior of our stores. You see this check on the wall above the cabinets and on the fabric of the curtains in the fitting rooms. You will also come across this check in the shop windows and on the upholstery of the dark wooden chairs. This recognizable check is reminiscent of the traditional check on a Scottish kilt and that is correct! The check pattern in our stores is derived from the tartan with which the Gordon clan, a large clan from Scotland, decorated their kilts, sweaters, socks and flags.
The Gordon ClanTartan is a woven piece of cloth that consists of a number of colourful stripes in a certain pattern. Next to each other, these form a colourful check pattern. Each Scottish clan, including the Gordon clan, had its own check, its own tartan, so that it was clear to everyone who belonged to the clan. It also gave a feeling of togetherness and solidarity. The colours of the tartan of the Gordon clan, and therefore of The English Hatter, are dark green, navy blue and black and contains two yellow lines.
Gordon x The English HatterIn the 80s, the then owner of The English Hatter wanted to further implement the real English look in the store. He felt that a Scottish plaid should not be missing and decided to do something special with the packaging material for ties . The packaging was printed with the Scottish plaid of the Gordon clan. The plaid fitted perfectly with the classic look of The English Hatter and was therefore continued in the interior of the store. The plaid is still used on the curtains of the fitting rooms, on the upholstery of chairs and on wallpaper printed especially for The English Hatter. The Gordon plaid enhances the classic look of The English Hatter and has become an indispensable design element in our stores.
